Ingredients

Scale

4. Ingredient List:
Meat Sauce:
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 (28-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
6 ounces tomato paste
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cheese Filling:
15 ounces ricotta cheese
15 ounces cottage cheese (optional)
2 large eggs
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Pasta and Other:
1 pound bow tie pasta (farfalle)
2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking pasta)
1 tablespoon olive oil (for greasing dish)
Cooking spray or butter (optional, for greasing dish)

Instructions

5. Preparation Instructions:
1. Prepare Meat Sauce: Brown ground beef in a large pot over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease. Add onion and garlic; cook until softened. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes.
2. Prepare Cheese Filling: Combine ricotta, cottage cheese (if using), eggs, Parmesan, mozzarella, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix until smooth.
3. Cook Pasta: Cook bow tie pasta al dente according to package directions. Drain well.
4. Assemble Lasagna: Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Layer meat sauce, pasta, and cheese filling in the dish, repeating layers and ending with meat sauce. Sprinkle with extra mozzarella.
5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until bubbly and heated through. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  1. : Cottage cheese adds creaminess to the filling but is optional. You can make the meat sauce and cheese filling ahead of time. Freeze assembled (unbaked) lasagna for up to 3 months or baked lasagna for up to 2 months. Vegetarian option: substitute ground beef with mushrooms, lentils, or spinach. Add vegetables like zucchini or bell peppers to the sauce or filling. Use different cheeses like provolone, fontina, or Asiago.
